Seek after learning for the sake of your collective wellbeing
Kia ora Koutou Katoa
Our school vision states that learning at Hutt Intermediate brings joy and a sense of achievement. At a very simplified level schools are all about childrens’ learning. Primarily that is why they exist.
However, learning is not just for our tamariki. Kaiako also need to be able to learn in order to keep abreast of changes in curriculum, new approaches to teaching and learning and to keep up with what we are trying to achieve strategically. We spend a considerable amount of money using the best consultants we can, releasing our teaching teams during school hours, and working during term holidays as learners.
However, teacher-only days such as the one we are holding tomorrow, are another way in which we can have all our staff together to engage in professional learning.
From time to time some whānau question the use and timing of teacher-only days. We have tried to minimise disruption as much as possible by coordinating our days with our local schools and attaching it to a long weekend.
Our teacher-only days were awarded to us as part of our recent employment negotiations. The purpose of these is to provide teachers and principals with additional time to focus on curriculum and teaching and learning.
We will be using our day to work on our local curriculum, through the lens of kaitiakitanga, to plan an integrated learning programme for all tamariki. This programme will be ready for implementation before the end of this term. A particular focus will be looking at ways we can weave Mātauranga Māori, innovation, social responsibility, future focus and community and whānau involvement throughout the students' learning.
We look forward to involving whānau and our wider community in our kaitiakitanga programmes and sharing the learning with you.
Have a great long weekend, we hope the weather is kind to you all no matter where you may be.
